Abstract

CLIL teachers aim for their students to become proficient users of multimedia technology. To achieve this goal, teachers need to model effective use of these technologies. Current evidence, however, indicates that many CLIL teachers are not effectively using technologies. As a result, students are not becoming proficient. Few know how to use design principles like ‘proximity,’ ‘contrast,’ ‘contiguity,’ and ‘affordance’ to lay out a slide, storyboard a presentation, pitch a project, prototype an idea, or model a process when using multimedia technologies.
To improve teacher effectiveness with multimedia technologies—so students become more proficient—this presentation focuses on equipping teachers to become effective users of one particular multimedia technology: presentation software. Rather than crowd words on a slide, display pixelated images, mix colors that clash, and ply backgrounds that veil, CLIL teachers will learn the science and scholarship of ‘information design’ to craft presentations with visually clear content and language. The result improved teacher effectiveness as well as student proficiency with multimedia technology.
