Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) has become the umbrella term de-scribing both learning another (content) subject such as physics or thermodynamic through the medium of a foreign language and learning a foreign language by study-ing a content-based subject. Different forms of CLIL have previously been known as ‘Content-based instruction’, ‘English across the curriculum’ and ‘Bilingual education’. “CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focused aims, namely the learning of content, and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language” (Marsh, 1994). More specifically, CLIL is a dual-focused teaching and learning approach in which the L1 and an additional language or two are used for promoting both content mastery and language acquisi-tion to pre-defined levels (Mehisto et al., 2008).
